On Monday, another earthquake struck the Turkish-Syrian border region, just two weeks after a larger quake devastated the area, killing over 47,000 people and damaging or destroying hundreds of thousands of homes.
Monday's 6.4-magnitude earthquake was centered near the southern Turkish city of Antakya and was felt in Syria, Egypt, and Lebanon. After this major earthquake there have been 26 minor aftershocks experienced.
According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), it struck at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
Hatay Mayor Lutfu Savas noted that he had received reports of people trapped under rubble following the latest earthquake. According to Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, there were three fatalities and over 200 injuries.
Residents in Samandag reported more houses collapsing but the majority of the population had already fled following the initial tremors, according to the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority AFAD, which recorded one person killed there. The streets were dark and deserted, surrounded with piles of trash and furniture.
As hundreds of rescuers worked through the night and early hours of Tuesday to reach the men, some took to sleeping on the rubble close to fires to stay warm while others battled icy weather to move heavy rubble.
The general public has been warned by officials to keep away from structures. Fuat Oktay, the vice president of Turkey, urged the public "not to enter the damaged buildings, especially to take their possessions" earlier in the day.
Fahrettin Koca, the minister of health for Turkey, reported on Twitter that 18 of the injured were sent to Adana and Dörtyol in serious condition. Some victims are still receiving services from field hospitals, he claimed.
"I hope that the injured, patients, locals, and citizens of our entire nation recover quickly. May Allah provide us health and prosperity, and keep us safe from further suffering and anxiety "said Koca.
